Now, I have the safe for 9 months. I thought I will add more information about my experience. The mechanical combination lock is a good idea. You do not have to worry about batteries dying or electrical failures. However, after you turn the first number of the combination lock, then it automatically lands on the rest of the combinations as you turn the combination knob. That's why I changed my review from 5 stars to 3 stars. The idea behind buying a safe is privacy and protection. If the combination lock is easy to open then there is no point of using it as a safe. The outside and inside of the safe looks like it is made out of plastic. However, the safe has good amount of weight. Therefore, it makes me wonder if there is metal under the plastic. Plastic might be used on the exterior surface to increase the longetivity of the safe (to protect it from rusting). I am just making an assumption. We need an expert from First Alert to tell us why this safe looks like it is made out of plastic.P.S. - I am able to pick up the safe by myself (6'2" and 180lbs).--------I have this safe little over a month now. It is great for what I need. There is enough space to put important documents and other valuables.Despite the other comments, my item was well packaged. It came with packaging material on all four corners to protect the item during shipment. I have posted a picture of it.I also purchased an Eva-dry Renewable Mini Dehumidifier. The case was closed for a full month and the humidifier did not show any sign of moisture. All the paper documents were dry and did not indicate any sign of moisture either. It is a great value for the price. Make sure to read the Operation & Installation Guide for proper use and maintenance.I bought this safe (First Alert 2092F) because I want to protect important documents (wills, power of attorney, birth certificates, passports, etc) and memory sticks from fire and water. It is UL rated for protecting contents with inside temp of less than 350 degrees F for at least an hour for a fire of 1700 degrees F. I did not buy it as a security safe. In fact I am leaving the key in the safe so that a thief could easily open the safe and see that there are no valuables, rather than trying to break into the safe or carrying off the safe. Great price on Amazon (including free shipping) and it arrived exactly on date promised. No damage of any kind. Manual is easy to follow. No problems with learning how to open the safe with combination (opened on first try) and the key works fine. The key overrides the combination, which is what I wanted.Internal dimensions give 1.31 cu.ft. of storage space which is ample for my purposes (it holds all my key documents and more). Adjustable shelf is handy. Excellent price for safe of this size with these fire and water ratings. My research on safes found that you can buy much bigger and better safes, but if someone wants a safe that protects for long periods at very high temps and with very high security protection, then you will have to pay in thousands of dollar for a commercial safe, even for one this size. If you want a safe that provides good fire and water protection and some security for a reasonable price, I recommend you take a close look at the First Alert 2092F.Very happy so far, opens easily - love feature of ability to open with key too. sturdy well design and very well worth the money it cost.Have not had any problems with this safe, has been a year or so. Probably only had to open it about 5 times since purchase. As for the design; the dialer is complete metal, the black handle is full plastic, does feel like i could break it if pulled too hard. Everytime I have had to open it, I've had to pull up the turning directions as it is not a normal turning style I'm use too with combination locks. Does seem secure as it still has its new smell, not willing to test it for the waterproof factor though. All and all, worth the money I spent on it so far. It is heavy to the extent someone would be able to carry it easily but not very far without showing stress for carrying it so long (about 50 yards it starts to get awkward) I just have it laying on the floor hidden as if its furniture, I do not see a way to anchor it to a wall without a full support "box" style cut out (meaning you cant mount it like a tv mount) 4 stars due to the "cheap" feel of it. UPDATE NOV 2012: safe is still going strong, no problems with combination dialer or lock, all is working well. Opened maybe 50 times since purchase, still feels new.Received the safe well packaged and undamaged. Unfortunately it would not open. I was able to figure out the combination and use the over-ride key to turn the handle, but the door just wouldn't budge. I tried the 'butter knife' trick to no avail. Back she went. Thanks to Amazon's terrific return policy I had a new one within a week, and it works fine. The combination takes more turns than I would prefer (use the directions in the manual with the combo. numbers on the tag), but for the half dozen times I'll probably open this up in a year, I'll use the key and keep the combination as a back-up. Besides, if a thief wants into this thing he's not going to fool with the combination lock or go searching your house for the key... he's either going to take a sledge hammer to it or carry it away.As far as quality I think it is a solid safe. I like the plastic coating inside and out, and there is certainly steel underneath. It's probably not strong enough to thwart a determined thief, but will certainly make it much tougher on them. My main concern was for fire protection and a deterent for the not so determined thief. Pretty good bargain.I couldn't open safe with combination.. The dial is plastic so numbers slipped. Nit like the old " metal" combinations that were precise. This company cut corners.
